THOSE interesting little dogs known as Maltese Dog have a history that goes further back than that of any of the Toy breeds. So called because of their association with the island in the Mediterranean. It is not certain that that was their original home, for Strabo, writing in A.D. 25, said: "There Maltese is a town in the Sicily called Melita, whence are exported many beautiful dogs called Canis Melitei.
They Maltese Dog were the peculiar favourites of the women." He spoke of them as being no bigger than common ferrets or weasels, a description that seems to have been an effort of the imagination. It is clear, however, that they are of very ancient derivation. Their Maltese Dogs most conspicuous feature is the long silky coat, not in any way woolly, but straight. Any self-colour is recognised, but it is desirable that they should be pure white. Slight lemon markings do not disqualify.
The Maltese Dogs head, of a terrier shape, should not be too long, too narrow or rounded in skull. Ears long and well feathered, hanging close to the head. Eyes dark brown with black rims and not too far apart. Nose black. Legs short and straight; feet round. The Maltese Dog Body short and cobby, low to ground, and back straight from top of shoulders to tail. Tail well arched over back and well feathered. Size from 4 lb. to 9 lb., the smaller the better. They should have a sharp terrier appearance with lively action.
