CONSIDERING that they have not been before the public seriously for more than about fifteen years, the position reached by Sealybams is remarkable. Those who remember the diversity of types that prevailed may well be amazed at the uniformity now apparent, although breeders are not yet unanimous concerning size. Sealyhams Terrier are essentially sportsmen; they were boomed into favour on account of their prowess in badger digging, and It is to be hoped that they will never degenerate into lapdogs.
The late Captain Edwardes produced this strain of Terriers purely for sporting purposes, and their pluck remains unimpaired. The Sealyham Terrier is not a Wire-haired Fox Terrier on short legs. His skull is wider between the ears, the jaw is more powerful, and the body is longer. The weight is about the same, but the coat is harder and more profuse. Eyes are dark brown or dark hazel. The neck is fairly long, thick and muscular, and the chest is broad and deep, being well let down between the legs. Ribs are well sprung, and the hindquarters are very strong.
The Sealyham Terrier body should be sufficiently long to be ftetible. The legs should be short and as straight as possible, and the feet round and cat-like with thick pads. Sealyham Terrier colour Is generally all white, or white with lemon, brown or badger-pied markings on head and ears. Measurements are not very helpful in appraising the merits of a d o , , but it may be said that the best height Is from 8 inches to 12 inches at the shoulder.
The American Kennel Club's definition of Sealyham Terrier Dog test: "it offers breeders and owners of small terriers a standardize gauge to measure their dog’s natural aptitude and trained hunting and working behaviors when exposed to an underground hunting situation.” In earlier generations, the mention of “working terrier” was understood by anyone who was to discuss the topic. It can be documented that the American Sealyham Terrier Club has offered working certificates to its member’s dogs since 1913. At one time a general rule of the club was “to encourage field trials and the development of the working qualities of the breed”.
Sealyham Terrier is a non-competitive program a dog will either pass or fail. It begins with the basic introduction to den work and quarry and progresses through gradual steps to require the dog to demonstrate that it is willing to perform the required tasks including seeking its quarry, locating and working it underground. Even if your Sealyham Terrier doesn’t qualify, you will have a fun time and will meet lots of other terriers folks who will offer help in learning more about the wonderful world of Earth Dogs!

Three of the Ilmer pack are on exhibition at this show "not for competition". They are miniatures, all of whom have bred, all of whom go to ground to fox or badger, and all are straight out of hard work. Many hundreds of rabbits as well as pheasants, hares, etc., have been shot over them this season. These little dogs make ideal pets, and are being exported the world over. They Sealyhaham breed true to type and size. The Ilmer pack includes both miniatures and larger type, but no dog who fights or won't work is kept. Visitors are cordially invited to a kennel whence many champions have come, but which seeks to combine character and sporting qualities with good looks.
