Once you have a Maine Coon Cat, what can you expect? Again, Maine Coon Cats are similar to other cats in many ways but uniquely different at the same time. First, don’t expect your Maine Coon to become a lap cat. It is rare for these large cats to sit in one’s lap for very long, although they will usually be very content to sit beside you. It is believed that their large size makes lap sitting uncomfortable for them.
Expect your Maine Coon to be full of energy. Other cats may nap all day and your Maine Coon Cat will definitely take his share of naps but you can expect a little more activity from him than from other breeds of cats. Like a toddler, he is apt to be into everything, and it is important that you provide plenty of toys for him to play with and that you pay lots of attention to him. While Maine Coons do become larger than other breeds of domestic cats, they manage to keep their kittenish personality for their entire lives. Older cats generally nap a great deal, and play very seldom but this cannot be said of Maine Coon Cats. A ten year old Maine Coon will most likely be just as playful as a six month old Maine Coon.
You can generally expect a Maine Coon cat to be congenial more so than other breeds. They like people, and don’t mind being handled too much. However, if a Maine Coon has been abused, or is often made to feel frightened or insecure, this may not be the case. Also note that while these large cats are good natured, this does not mean that they can’t or don’t get overly rough when they are playing. It is important to not play rough with the Maine Coon when they are kittens, so that they don’t grow to have aggressive play behavior as adults.
Maine Coons don’t sound like other cats. They have a very distinctive trill, which some describe as a cross between a purr, a chirp, and a meow. If you talk to them, they will ‘converse’ with you. They love the sound of your voice, and want you to talk to them often. In spite of their size, Maine Coons have very soft ‘voices.’

While your attention does not always have to be on them and their attention will not always be on you they do want the option of following you around the house as you perform your usual activities. They want to watch and sometimes, they even want to help. This is a very social breed of cat. Even if they aren’t watching what you are doing, or trying to get your attention, you can bet that your Maine Cat will always be close by. He will typically want to be in the same room that you are in and like all cats, he won’t be able to stand a room that he can’t get into because of a closed door. In watching both sexes of the Maine Coon, you may notice that the males tend to have more of a sense of humor than the females do. The females, like other breeds of cats, often try to ‘keep up appearances’ and hang onto their dignity. The males are usually more laid back, and willing to entertain and be entertained even if it is on accident.
Many people believe that Maine Coons are good with children, and for the most part, this is true. But if a child accidentally hurts the Maine Coon, this breed will most likely react just like any other breed would with claws and teeth. Otherwise, the Maine Coon seems to get along just fine with other domestic animals, including dogs. They are willing to accept any other pet or human into their lives, as long as they are also accepted. Again, these animals are very playful, and chase or fetch seems to be their two favorite games. Unlike many other breeds of cats, however, the Maine Coon doesn’t like to climb as much. It is believed that they are slightly vertical challenged. This does not mean, however, that they won’t climb. They will if they need to.
As mentioned earlier, your Maine Coon Cat will want your love and attention. If you are one of those people who is only home long enough to sleep and change clothes, this breed should not be a consideration. But if you work and are home in the evenings or if you are home all day, this is a great pet to have. You can bet he will be sitting at the door waiting for you when you get home. Just make sure that you are ready to spend the time with him that he needs in order to be happy. Overall, among pet owners who have shared their homes with Maine Coon Cats, as well as other breeds of cats, the general consensus is that Maine Coon Cats are more pleasurable to be around most likely because they are bred to be more people oriented than other breeds. They make excellent companions, and really seem to care about the humans in their lives.
So, what can you expect from your Maine Coon Cat? Expect to be loved, amused, entertained, watched, and cared about. He will do all of that for you but at the same time, he will also want to be loved, amused, entertained, and cared about. Be prepared to share both your home, your time, and your heart with a Maine Coon Cat.
