The Bucovina Shepherd Dog is a natural breed that developed in the Carpathian region, in Bucovina, more precisely in the North East part of Romania. This breed has been the subject of a special attention as far as selection and improvement are concerned, which let to the present type. In this region, dogs belonging to this breed are successfully used in guarding heards and properties. This dog is mostly known as "DULAU" or "CAPAU". The first standard was drafted in 1982 and revised in 2001 by the Romanian Cynological Association. The present standard, dated on 29.03.2002, was drafted and revised according to the F.C.I. model established in Jerusalem.
Bucovina Shepherd Dog is a large dog, towering, audacious and proud. Sexual dimorphism is well established. the ratio between the length of the muzzle and the length of the skull is 1:1. The length of the body is slightly larger than the height at withers. The scapula humerus angle is approximately 100 – 110°.
Bucovina Shepherd Dog Temperament is Balanced, calm, very devoted, loves children. Wary of strangers. Excellent heard dog, courageous and very combative against potential animals of pray (bear, wolf, lynx). He barks strongly. When his territory is approached by strangers or animals, the dog signals it by a very strong barking, of a low tonality, that can be heard over great distances. At nighttime, he patrols around the property or heards.
HEAD
Skull: Moderate width. The longitudinal axes of the skull and muzzle are slightly convergent. Seen from the front, the skull is slightly domed; seen from the side, it is almost flat. The width of the skull: male: 16 – 18 cm, female: 15 – 17 cm. The zygomatic arches have an average development. The Occipital protuberance is slightly defined. Nose: well developed, wide, black.Muzzle: tronconic, same length as the skull; well developed, tapering progressively towards
the extremity, but it is never pointed. Lips: Thick, tight, strongly pigmented.
Jaws / Teeth: Powerful jaws, full dentition with white, healthy, well set teeth; scissor bite. The pincer bite is admitted. Cheeks: Not protruding. Eyes: Small, as compared to the head; almond and oblique, hazel or slightly lighter, never yellow. The eyelids are well pigmented. Ears: Relatively high set, "V" shaped with the tip slightly rounded, hanging closely to the cheeks. Cropping them is forbidden.
HAIR
The coat is short on the head and on the front part of the limbs. On the body, the coat isabundant, straight, thicker and harsher, its length reaching 6 – 9 cm. The undercoat is shorter,
denser, and lighter. On the neck, the coat is longer, forming a mane; on the backside of the
limbs the coat is profuse. The tail is long haired, its coat being longer and thicker.
COLOUR
Classic colour: Well-defined spots of wolf-grey or black colour appear against a white background colour. On the limbs, spackles in black or other colours should be allowed. Uniform colours (without markings) white or black are allowed, but should not be followed.
