Norwich Terrier Guide and Informations

ALTHOUGH NORWICH TERRIER these sporting little Terriers have been known among a select few from the 1880's, it Is only recently that they have been seen on the show bench. They have been used with packs of hounds in this country and in America for a good many years, and they are equal to any form of sport that is expected of the terrier family. It is supposed that in the first instance they were produced from small Irish Terriers, the idea being to get a dog that was smaller than any of the other terriers. In 1932 they were recognised by the Kennel Club as a distinct variety, and they are now attracting admirers.


That year the Norwich Terrier Club came into being, and a standard of points was formulated. This aims at a dog that shall weigh between 10 lb. and 14 lb., the ideal being put at 11 lb. Height not to exceed 10 inches to 12 inches at withers. The muzzle is foxy yet strong, the length being about one-third less than a measurement from the occiput to the bottom of the stop, which should be well-defined. Skull wide, slightly rounded, and having good width between eyes and between ears. Ears, if erect, slightly larger than a Cairn's; if dropped, very neat and small.

The Norwich Terrier eyes very dark, bright and keen. Full of expression. Teeth strong and rather large. Neck short and strong, set on clean shoulders. Back short to medium; loins very strong; ribs well sprung. Legs short, powerful, straight if possible with sound bone. Feet round and thick. Quarters strong, with great powers of propulsion. Tail docked to a medium length Colour, red, black-and-tan or grizzle-and-tan being permitted. Coat as hard and wiry as possible, and absolutely straight, lying close to the body.


Your breeder will no doubt recommend a high quality dog food suitable for the hard coat of your Norwich and may also suggest a daily vitamin or other additives. No matter how much activity your dog may enjoy, it is important not to overfeed as Norwich can put on weight easily. Make sure you have plenty of water bowls in permanent locations so your dog always knows where to find fresh clean water. Bred for a hardy constitution a Norwich Terrier accepts most weather conditions, but excessive heat can present problems for many dogs. Never let your Norwich become overheated and never feed immediately after heavy activity.
